I have been studying habitat occupancy of Western Screech-Owls and Barred Owls in a remote region of British Columbia’s Central Coast, in the vicinity of the Heiltsuk village of Bella Bella.  The coastal subspecies of Western Screech-Owl has been designated as “Threatened” in Canada, having declined sharply from the southwestern mainland and Vancouver Island.  Predation by the recently arrived Barred Owl is the leading suspect for this decline, though opinions vary on this.  By examining habitat differences for these two species, I hope to learn whether the remote Central Coast of BC could be a refuge for screech-owls.
